Earring campaign – fighting depression in memory of Justice Chester whom we lost tragically.
Justice was diagnosed with major depression after a life changing event at the age of 13 years, life events continued and depression doggedly fought every step, both Justice and the depression were persistent, battles won and lost through this 10-year war.
Why earrings? In many cultures and contexts, earrings have traditionally been worn as symbols of cultural or tribal identity as well as prosperity. Justice often felt depression was a part of his identity and due to the stigmas surrounding mental health and the negative effects of depression. Justice counteracted these feelings through numerous forms of self-expression, through his music, his style, his tattoo’s, his piercings and specifically his stretcher earrings.
Justice’s symptoms became a part of his day-to-day experience, he would often say “I’ve always been this way.” Justice was so much more and touched the lives of so many in such a profound manner of kindness through listening with an empathetic ear! Most importantly, he wanted everyone to succeed through life’s challenges.
Depression is a real illness and help is available. With proper diagnosis and treatment, the vast majority of people with depression will overcome it. Between 80% and 90% percent of people with depression eventually respond well to treatment. Almost all those fighting depression gain some relief from their symptoms.
- You can support this fight with the purchase of a pair of handmade earrings with all proceeds being donated to Manitoba Mental Health Services.
The Objective to support the memory of Justice is through the preservation of life:
- Fundraise in support of mental health services
- Raise awareness, knowledge and acceptance of mental illness
- Reduce stigma and create an environment that encourages people to come forward for early intervention and treatment
- Grow the campaign to spread the message of hope and recovery
